More Than an Eco Shop: What a Week at Tees Valley Together Really Looks Like

When people first hear about Tees Valley Together, they might know us because of the Eco Shop, Home from Home, Warm Welcome Wednesday or one of our community activities.

But those projects are only part of the story.

Sometimes the most important thing we do isn’t something that fits neatly into a box or appears on a stock list.

It might be listening to someone who needs to talk.

Helping somebody find the right organisation.

Making a cup of tea.

Pointing someone in the right direction.

Or simply welcoming somebody through the door who needs somewhere to start.

That’s why we decided to take a closer look at what an ordinary week at Tees Valley Together actually involves.

One week. So much more than we realised.

During one informal snapshot across just three of our opening days, we recorded approximately:

100 customers served

12 people signposted to other organisations and support

24 people who needed a listening ear

16 people served tea, coffee, toast or biscuits

20 visitors helped to find the right service or location

And even those figures don’t tell the whole story.

The tally was simply based on what one member of the team was able to see and record while everyone got on with the day-to-day work, so there will undoubtedly have been conversations, small acts of support and moments of connection that never made it onto the list.

That is everyday life at TVT.

Practical help is often only the beginning

Someone might walk through our door looking for affordable food or clothing.

While they’re here, they might mention something else they’re struggling with.

That conversation may lead to signposting, another service, a community activity or simply the reassurance that somebody has listened.

We don’t pretend that we can solve everything ourselves.

Instead, we want Tees Valley Together to be a trusted front door to support: somewhere local, welcoming and approachable where people can ask a question without worrying that they have come to the wrong place.

If we can help, we will.

If somebody else is better placed to help, we’ll try to connect you with them.

Community happens in the everyday moments

There are also the moments that are easy to overlook because they simply become part of the day.

A volunteer sorting donations.

People chatting over a cup of tea.

A rail of good-quality clothing ready to find a new home.

Someone coming in for one reason and leaving knowing about another opportunity.

A person who simply needed somebody to listen.

These things might not always sound dramatic, but together they create connection, reduce isolation and make support easier to access.

Our volunteers make so much of this possible

Behind all of this is a fantastic team of volunteers giving their time, skills and energy.

Some help in the Eco Shop.

Some sort donations.

Some welcome people.

Some make refreshments.

Some share knowledge.

And some simply notice when somebody needs a little more time.

We want to start telling more of their stories too, because TVT wouldn’t be TVT without them.

We want more people to know what’s here

One of our priorities now is simple: visibility.

We want more people across Hemlington and the wider Tees Valley to know what support exists, what is happening locally and how they can get involved.

Through our website, social media and Hemlington Connected, we’ll be sharing more of the everyday work happening across TVT.

We’ll also be telling more stories about our volunteers, our partnerships, the difference local organisations make and the many ways businesses and individuals can support us.

Because the more connected we are, the more we can do together.

Be part of it

There are lots of ways to become part of Tees Valley Together.

You can visit us.

Volunteer.

Tell somebody about us.

Attend an activity.

Submit a local event to Hemlington Connected.

Support one of our appeals.

Become a business or community partner.

Or simply follow what we do and share it with somebody who might need us.

Sometimes making a difference starts with something very small.

And sometimes those small things add up to far more than we realise.
